A Deal with the Devil
Decision·Ending impact
Yes — going to the parley does not commit you to his deal.
Go to the parley if you want to keep both Brencis finale routes available. Simply meeting Brencis does not commit you to his deal. During the conversation, attacking him leads toward The Folk Hero; continuing the deal keeps The Turncoat route available. The later Manumit hideout decision is the more important commitment point.
Go to the parley?
Yes — it keeps options open
Fight Brencis?
The Folk Hero route
Accept the deal?
Keeps The Turncoat route open
Recommended: make a Manual Save before the parley
A Deal with the Devil is part of the finale sequence, so this is a good place to keep a save you control. That way you can try the other route without replaying the campaign.
How manual saves work →Meet Brencis at the parley
Hear his offer
Sword / attack him → Fight Brencis → The Folk Hero
Continue talking → Accept or consider the deal → The Turncoat stays available
Reach the Manumit hideout
Leave → Not committed yet
Mark → Betrayal route → The Turncoat stays available
Everything above the Mark step is still reversible. Mark is where the deal actually gets written.
Pick the stage you are actually at.
Yes, unless you already know you want to ignore Brencis entirely.
Attending the meeting lets you hear his offer and still choose whether to fight him or continue talking.
Going to Shrike's Crag and starting the conversation does not by itself lock you into The Turncoat ending.
Ignoring the invitation and letting the offer sit too long is a recorded outcome of this quest: your family dies and the deal is no longer available.
Brencis says he will wait until his coronation and no longer, so the offer does not stay open forever.
If you want to explore the Brencis finale routes, attending the parley is the safer choice.
Fight Brencis
Reject him and start the confrontation.
Hear Him Out
Stay in the conversation and keep the deal route available.
On this route, defeating Brencis at the parley leads to his soldiers executing your family. The quest's own outcome records it: Brencis does not return, and you lose everyone even though the valley is free.
I met Brencis to parley – but decided to attack him. Only the devil had the last laugh – when Brencis didn’t return, his soldiers executed my family...
The hideout betrayal ends with the Manumits massacred, while your family is released.
The parley has a commitment part where the hostile options are marked. Choosing one starts the fight immediately, so it is the one thing to avoid if you want the deal route.
These confirmed responses start the fight
They belong to the quest’s own choice records and all lead into the same fight branch.
What should you say for the deal route?
These are his own lines from the parley, and they explain why attending is not the same as agreeing.
“You don’t need to answer now. I respect you enough to give you time to consider your options.”
Brencis
“Good. When you find the place, mark it with this. I will take care of the rest.”
Brencis
“Very well, child. You have my word. I shall take no more blood from your family.”
Brencis
Yes. Continuing the conversation does not mean you have already betrayed the Manumits. You can keep the deal route available and still reach another major decision later.
The important later choice is whether to mark the Manumit hideout.
Mark the Hideout or Leave? →The deal is not one decision. Only one step on this ladder writes the Brencis deal, and it is not the conversation.
| Stage | What it means | Committed? |
|---|---|---|
| Hear Brencis out | Keeps the deal path available | No |
| Agree to help | Advances the deal route | No |
| Find the hideout | Prepares the betrayal | No |
| Mark the hideout | Major commitment | Yes |
| Complete the betrayal | Turncoat route | Yes |
Not immediately.
Meeting Brencis and hearing his offer does not itself force The Turncoat route. However, A Deal with the Devil is part of the finale sequence, so make a Manual Save before committing to an ending branch.
| Your goal | Recommended |
|---|---|
| I want The Folk Hero | Fight Brencis |
| I want The Turncoat | Hear him out and continue the deal route |
| I want to keep options open | Attend the parley, avoid attacking, and save before the later commitment |
| I want to see multiple endings | Manual Save before the parley |
| I do not know yet | Hear him out rather than attacking immediately |
This decision only sets up a route. It does not finish one.
If you fight Brencis
The Folk Hero route. Your family is executed on this path.
If you continue the deal
The Turncoat stays available. It becomes reachable after you mark the Manumit hideout and the betrayal resolves.
This page will not save you as The Turncoat, because the deal is not committed yet.
Yes, if you want to keep your finale options open. Attending the parley does not commit you to the deal.
No. Meeting Brencis and hearing his offer leaves the deal uncommitted, and he tells you that you do not need to answer yet.
Fight him if you want The Folk Hero route. On that route his soldiers execute your family.
The deal route stays available. Nothing is committed until you mark the Manumit hideout.
Yes, before the hideout commitment. Leave is explicitly reversible at that point, and the deal is only written when you mark the hideout.
The hostile responses in the commitment part of the conversation. Any of them starts the fight immediately.
Before the parley. This is a finale branch, so a Manual Save lets you try the other route without replaying the campaign.
Not immediately, but it is part of the finale chain. Save before you commit to an ending branch.
The later Manumit hideout decision. Marking it starts the commitment, and the betrayal sequence resolves it.
Hear him out and keep a Manual Save. You can leave the hideout unmarked and the route stays open.
