How Saving Works inThe Blood of Dawnwalker

The game uses four save types: Autosave, Final Autosave, Quicksave and Manual Save.

Quick answer

Use Quicksave or a Manual Save when you finish something you do not want to repeat. Do not assume the game just wrote a new Autosave.

  • Autosave

    Game-created progression save

  • Final Autosave

    Separate special autosave slot

  • Quicksave

    Fast player-triggered save

  • Manual Save

    Player-created save point

Don't assume every fight or transaction creates an autosave.

If you just finished something you do not want to repeat, make a quicksave or manual save when saving is available.

The Four Types of Save

AutosaveGame-created progression save

Created automatically by the game. It is a separate slot from Quicksave and Manual Save.

Final AutosaveSeparate special autosave slot

A separate game-managed save used around late-run and final progression. It is not the same slot as the ordinary Autosave.

QuicksaveFast player-triggered save

A player-triggered checkpoint you can create when saving is available. Best before a risky encounter, after meaningful progress, or before experimenting.

  • Before a risky encounter
  • After meaningful progress
  • Before experimenting
Manual SavePlayer-created save point

Use manual saves for milestones you may want to return to later. Choices, missables, romance, ending branches and time-sensitive states make these more important than in a typical action RPG.

When Does the Game Autosave?

Confirmed autosave behavior

  • The game maintains an Autosave slot.
  • Autosaves are separate from Manual Save and Quicksave.
  • A Final Autosave is also maintained separately.

Do not rely on

  • ? An autosave after every battle
  • ? An autosave after every vendor interaction
  • ? An autosave after every pickup

Players have reported finishing substantial combat and other activity without receiving the autosave they expected. Check Load Game if you are unsure.

When Should You Save Manually?

Dawnwalker locks choices, missables, romance and ending branches. Manual saves are for points you may want to reopen.

  • Before

    A major irreversible choice

Hold a file before a major branch: marking the hideout starts the Brencis commitment sequence, while staying silent is a separate conditional throne-room decision.

    Mark Hideout or Leave

  • Before

    A finale or route commitment

Keep a milestone before you commit a late route such as A Deal with the Devil.

    A Deal with the Devil

  • Before

A time-sensitive quest you care about

Timed and missable quests can fail for good. Save before you spend a day you cannot get back.

    Missable quests

  • Before

Testing an uncertain romance or character outcome

Romance commits and character quests can lock later states. Save before you try a branch you might want to undo.

    A Closer Look

  • After

A long stretch of exploration or difficult progress

If you would hate to repeat the last hour, write a Quicksave or Manual Save while saving is available.

A Safe Save Strategy for One Playthrough

These are milestone reminders, not required slot numbers. Use the save habit you already like.

  1. Prologue complete

Manual milestone before the valley opens.

  2. Before major route choices

    Manual milestone before irreversible commits.

  3. Before important character quests

Manual milestone before romance or survival branches.

  4. Before the finale

Manual milestone for nearby ending states.

Quicksave between milestones.

Which save should I use right now?

  • I just finished something difficult

    Quicksave

  • I'm about to make a major choice

    Manual Save

  • I want a permanent replay point

    Manual Save

  • I'm relying on the game to save itself

Saving Before an Ending

Dawnwalker currently has no New Game Plus carry-over, so milestone manual saves are especially useful if you want to revisit nearby ending states without replaying everything.

A finale save can help you revisit nearby outcomes, but earlier decisions may already have locked some routes.

Why Does My Save Say “Day X”?

Dawnwalker labels saves by the current in-game day rather than relying only on a real-world timestamp. Before the main valley opens, the save is labeled Prologue.

Day 6 on a save is not the same as spending six full real-world days, and it is not a complete accounting of the 30-day clock.

Check Your Last Save

Before continuing after a crash or a surprise death:

  1. Open Load Game
  2. Check the latest save type
  3. Check its in-game day
  4. Confirm whether your recent progress is represented

Can't save?

Saving is currently locked

If Manual Save and Quicksave are disabled, this is a different problem from normal autosave behavior.
