A Lone Wolf's Hunt Walkthrough

A Lone Wolf's Hunt is the solo Greifberg finale. It begins when Coen enters Greifberg Castle without Lacra or Crake as his finale ally. If you continue through the castle and defeat Brencis on your own, you reach The Folk Hero. Brencis can still offer deal or betrayal outcomes during the quest, so entering the castle alone does not lock every possible resolution.

Recommended: make a manual save before you enter Greifberg Castle. The Brencis conversation is the point of no return for several resolutions.

A Lone Wolf's Hunt Quick Answers

  • How it starts

    Enter Greifberg Castle alone

  • Final boss

    Brencis — solo route

  • The Folk Hero

    Defeat Brencis yourself

  • Can the route change?

Yes — the Brencis conversation can change the resolution

How Do You Start A Lone Wolf's Hunt?

Enter Greifberg Castle without Lacra or Crake accompanying you on their finale routes. The journal frames it exactly that way: confronting Brencis without anyone’s help is risky, but not impossible.

You do not need to have committed to The Folk Hero. This is the solo finale quest; the resolution you pick in front of Brencis is what decides the actual ending. Entering alone is the entry condition, not the ending.

What actually starts the quest

  • Coen enters Greifberg Castle without Lacra and without Crake as the finale ally.
  • The solo assault is already possible even if you never finished the other finale chains.
  • The quest is added as its own objective set, separate from the Midnight Reckoning and Rise at Dawn routes.

Keep one thing separate in your head: entering the castle alone is the trigger, and the way you got inside is only the entry method. Father Florin, the side gate key, and a night crossing over the wall all reach the same quest.

How to Enter Greifberg Castle Alone

The journal lists the side entrance as an objective, but it is marked optional — which is the game telling you that the castle can be entered another way. Here are the known routes, and what to do if one of them is unavailable.

The journal path is not every valid path. Because the side entrance objective is optional, a wall crossing is a legitimate solo entry rather than a missed objective.

Side entrance — side gate key

The side gate key opens the quiet way into Greifberg without fighting through the front. The key once belonged to a robber baron who served at the castle, and the baron connected to it is Gheorghe Racovitza, the bandit-camp leader under Xanthe’s protection.

Side entrance — Father Florin’s line

Working with Father Florin gives you a second way to reach the side entrance. His chain runs through In the Name of the Father and A Hero’s End, where he asks you to undergo a trial before he helps you against Brencis.

Over the wall at night

At night, vampiric traversal lets you cross the castle wall instead of using the gate at all. The journal never lists this as its own objective, so treat it as an alternate route rather than a step you missed.

Side Gate Key to Greifberg Castle

The side gate key is a quest item. Its in-game description ties it to a robber baron who served at the castle under Knyaz Skender, and the baron named in the connected bandit-camp record is Gheorghe Racovitza. If you have already dealt with his camp and the key is in your inventory, this is your cleanest way in.

Recorded source

Gheorghe Racovitza, the robber baron whose key this once was

The map marker shows the quest objective’s target area, not the exact door or the baron’s current position.

Can You Enter Greifberg Over the Wall?

Yes. A night approach with vampiric traversal gives you another solo way into Greifberg Castle, and the quest does not require the side entrance objective to be completed first.

If the side gate will not open and Father Florin’s chain is behind you, wait for night and cross the wall. Review the journal afterwards: the castle objectives continue from the courtyard.

Which Entrance Should I Use?

Pick the situation that matches your save. This only changes how you get inside, never which ending you can reach.

Your current situation

Open the side entrance on the map first. The objective marker shows the area, and the item page explains the key.

Father Florin is not required. The side gate key is not required. Neither is the wall crossing. You need one of them.

Solo Greifberg Walkthrough

Once you are inside, the quest is a castle run. The objectives below mirror the journal order, and the ones that depend on earlier choices are marked as conditional.

What Happens If You Didn’t Defeat the Boyars First?

The quest adapts. Boyars you left alive may appear during your Greifberg assault rather than blocking A Lone Wolf’s Hunt entirely, because their objectives are added into the castle flow instead of gating it.

Defeating all three Boyars beforehand is recommended preparation, never a quest requirement. A Lone Wolf’s Hunt is deliberately reachable without clearing them.

BoyarEarlier stateGreifberg effect
ambrusStill aliveCan be added as a fight inside the inner keep.
bakirStill aliveCan be added on the dungeon leg, standing between you and Brencis.
xantheAlive or unknownCan change the throne-room encounter and add her nightmare loop objective.

Earlier Boyar outcomes can also alter parts of the final Brencis encounter, so a Boyar you left standing is a fight you are choosing to have later.

Reaching Brencis

The castle objectives can send you to more than one place before you find him. Follow the current objective rather than guessing a fixed room: the journal moves between the throne room, the dungeons and the underground sanctuary.

What Happens When You Reach Brencis?

The conversation is the real decision point of this quest, and it splits into two directions. This is also where solo entry stops being the whole story.

If You Make a Deal With Brencis

Four recorded lines appear in this conversation. Two record a betrayal immediately, and two only start one. They matter to the epilogue, so they kept their own page — the summary below is here so you recognise them.

  • Lacra · Direct

    I killed Lacra.

Records the strongest Lacra betrayal straight away.

  • Lacra · Starts a route

I can lead you to your sworn enemy – Lacra.

Starts the Lacra betrayal, and can still escalate later.

  • Crake (Marat) / Manumits · Direct

The rebels failed because of me.

Records the strongest Manumit betrayal straight away.

  • Crake (Marat) / Manumits · Starts a route

I know where the rebels are hiding.

Starts the Manumit betrayal, and can still escalate later.

Compare all four Brencis betrayal choices

A dialogue line reporting a death is not proof that it caused one, and Lacra and the Manumits stay separate — never add them into one betrayal score.

A Lone Wolf’s Hunt Can End in More Than One Quest Resolution

The journal records four possible endings to this quest. Use this table to translate what the journal told you into the ending name a player actually recognises.

Quest resolution is not the same thing as the main ending name. The resolution is what happened at Greifberg; the ending is the conclusion the whole finale resolves to.

  • The Folk Hero

Brencis is dead and the family is saved

    Family: Saved

  • The Folk Hero

Brencis is dead and the family is avenged

    Family: Dead, then avenged

  • The Turncoat

    Agreement after sharing Manumit information

    Family: Released

  • The Turncoat

    Agreement after sharing Lacra information

    Family: Released

Quest resolution is not the same thing as the main ending name. The resolution is what happened at Greifberg; the ending is the conclusion the whole finale resolves to.

Does A Lone Wolf's Hunt Always Give The Folk Hero?

No. Starting A Lone Wolf’s Hunt only means you entered the Greifberg finale alone. To get The Folk Hero you must actually defeat Brencis on your own. The conversation in front of him can resolve the quest by agreement before that happens, and an agreement does not award this ending.

Can You Save Your Family in A Lone Wolf’s Hunt?

Yes, but family survival is a separate state from The Folk Hero ending itself. The quest records solo-Brencis outcomes where the family is saved and others where Coen avenges a family that is already dead — and both of those are still The Folk Hero.

Family saved

The journal says you freed Vale Sangora and saved your family, though not everyone came through untouched.

Family avenged

The journal says Brencis is dead and the family is avenged instead of saved. The ending name does not change; the epilogue does.

Family state never chooses the ending. It only changes what the epilogue shows, which is why the ending calculator asks about it on a separate layer.

Can You Get The Folk Hero Through A Lone Wolf’s Hunt?

Yes. Defeat Brencis rather than accepting an agreement, and the solo victory satisfies the condition. This is the classic way to reach it, though the parley in A Deal with the Devil can also produce a solo kill.

What to Expect From the Solo Brencis Fight

You fight the normal encounter alone, and there is no ally to split his attention.

  • The fight opens with his first health bar in the castle.
  • After that phase it moves to Anachora, where the encounter continues.
  • Defeating him there completes the solo victory condition for The Folk Hero.

A Lone Wolf’s Hunt FAQ

How do you start A Lone Wolf’s Hunt?

Enter Greifberg Castle alone, without Lacra or Crake as your finale ally.

Do you need Lacra or Crake in this quest?

No. Their absence is the whole point of the solo route. Bringing either of them moves the finale onto a different ending.

Do you need Father Florin to start A Lone Wolf’s Hunt?

No. Father Florin provides one way to use the side entrance, but the side gate key provides another route and a night wall crossing provides a third.

Where is the Side Gate Key to Greifberg Castle?

It is linked to Gheorghe Racovitza, the robber baron whose key it once was. The item description ties it to a baron who served at the castle under Knyaz Skender.

Can you enter Greifberg Castle over the wall?

Yes. At night, vampiric traversal can put you inside without using the side entrance at all. The side entrance objective is optional, so this is a real route.

Do you need to defeat all Boyars first?

No. Ambrus, Bakir and Xanthe can join the assault as dynamic encounters. Clearing them first is preparation, not a requirement.

Does A Lone Wolf’s Hunt automatically mean The Folk Hero?

No. The quest only means you entered the finale alone. The ending needs Brencis defeated by you.

How do you get The Folk Hero from this quest?

Defeat Brencis rather than accepting an agreement. The solo victory is what the ending checks.

Can you make a deal with Brencis in this quest?

Yes. The quest has two agreement resolutions, one built on Lacra and one built on the Manumits, and both resolve the finale into The Turncoat.

Can you save your family in A Lone Wolf’s Hunt?

Yes, in some resolutions. Family survival is a separate outcome from the ending name.

Can your family already be dead and you still get The Folk Hero?

Yes. The quest records a solo-Brencis resolution where the family is avenged instead of saved, and it still resolves as The Folk Hero.

Is there a time cost?

The journal records no time-sensitive objectives for this quest, so it does not spend days on its own.

Where should I save?

Before you enter Greifberg Castle, and again before the Brencis conversation, because that conversation decides between a kill and an agreement.
